As she was touching down in Rome, local editorial and commercial makeup artist Melissa Korn — whose client list includes Luly Yang, Julep Beauty, and Neiman Marcus — shared beauty tips to inform and inspire your future looks.

Favorite Product: The Rich Cream by Augustinus Bader. One cream, a million benefits and testimonials that will blow you away.

I Can’t Live Without: Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. I like to let them work double duty while I’m applying eye makeup. The eye masks conveniently catch any eyeshadow fallout.

Tips for Applying Flawless Makeup: Skin prep is everything. Legendary makeup artist Francois Nars once said, “Skin is 50 percent of makeup,” and it’s absolutely true. Makeup looks beautiful on smooth, hydrated skin. Invest in a set of quality makeup brushes, and clean them frequently. Make sure to give them a deep clean at home with a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. I like to condition them as well, but it’s not a necessary step. Also, I offer private, in-house makeup lessons, where we discuss your current skincare and makeup routine, teach you how to use what you have, and edit out what isn’t flattering or appropriate for your needs.

What’s Been Inspiring You Lately? Traveling to other countries and seeing everything with new eyes, including art museums, the changing colors and textures of nature throughout the seasons.

Favorite Shades for Lips, Eyes, and Cheeks: I’m currently really loving this bolder color throwback to the ’80s we are seeing on the runway, but with a more refined and modern touch. Bold color choices like yellows, pinks, blues, and purples in painterly washes on the eyes; a higher sculpted cheek in peach or rose tones; barely-there lips with perhaps a wash of tinted balm, but nothing more to balance out this strong, editorial beauty look.

How do you choose the products you use? In another life, I most likely would have been a beauty editor. I’m at Sephora much more than I care to admit, and always testing different formulas and brands at any store I come across. Beauty blogs, fellow industry experts, magazines, Instagram, and word of mouth keep me constantly busy discovering the best of the best. For my professional kit, I rely on a few go-to products as my mainstays, but I’m always adding something new.

When it comes to makeup, I wish people would … have fun with it! Learn to do your makeup basics properly, and then go from there. A bold lip color, if you always wear nudes, will elicit a million compliments. Find your favorite feature, and play it up a little more than you usually do. So, if you have brown eyes and always wear brown or black liner, try navy or any deep shade of blue instead. And while it can be an empowering tool, in confidence and a great artistic outlet, never forget that as much as we may love makeup, true beauty always comes from within.
