Iranian-Swedish Singer Snoh Aalegra on Her New Album, Makeup Routine, and How She Copes With Anxiety – Vogue

It’s not uncommon to experience a wave of chills—or emotions—while listening to Snoh Aalegra. This is especially true for the Iranian-Swedish R&B singer’s sophomore album, -Ugh, those feels again. From the upbeat energy of “Situationship” to the smooth and sultry vibes of “I Want You Around,” each song evokes passion and wisdom while stoking nostalgia and serving up relatable sentiments. “Every time you hear a project of mine, it basically [encompasses] what I’ve been going through or thinking about during the time I was making it,” she explains. “Sometimes random trauma from the past sneaks up on you, and then you have to deal with it. Music is my way of dealing with everything, and this album is everything I felt after being on my own post-breakup.”

Aalegra, who fell in love with music at the age of 7 and gravitated towards “big voices” like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder, has always turned to music to deal with her lifelong battle with anxiety. “It never lets me down and is always there for me, as cliche as it sounds,” she explains. “Just going to a concert calms me down.” In addition to music, it’s steering away from “anything toxic” that helps her on her healing journey. “That single glow is the best,” she says with a laugh. “But I don’t mean it just in terms of relationships.… That applies to [toxic] friendships and anything that drains you too.” While Aalegra believes its inner happiness that really makes a person glow, she can’t deny the power of La Mer’s Renewal Face Oil, which has proven to be her ultimate skin soother. “I have very sensitive skin, I can’t really do the whole peel and acidic stuff,” she says.

When it comes to makeup, Aalegra is influenced by both Sweden’s pared-back approach and her “lush and glamorous” Iranian roots. “I love gold, glitter, and glamour every now and then,” says Aalegra. To define her brown eyes, she looks to lash extensions from L.A.’s Treat Yourself Studios and slashes of Givenchy’s jet-black Liner Couture Precision Eyeliner pen. And for that virtually poreless skin? She applies Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation Stick and blends it in with a Beautyblender sponge. When she needs to camouflage the signs of a late night, Aalegra has a three-step concealer process, first layering on Estee Lauder’s Color Correcting Duo, then doubling down with Chanel’s Liquid Concealer before adding a top coat of NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer. As for the one product she “can’t go anywhere without,” that would be MAC Lipstick in nude pink Kinda Sexy.

Up next, Aalegra says there are “music videos on the way” and that she will continue traveling the U.S. for her “Ugh, a mini tour again” fall tour. And no doubt, she will continue to bring both inner and outer beauty to the stage—and beyond.
