The MoMA event included a gala dinner as well as the tribute to Dern and serves as a fundraiser for the maintenance and expansion of the museum’s Film Library.

Explaining the decision to choose Dern as the honoree for the annual event, Rajendra Roy, MoMA’s chief curator of film, said in a statement that the actress was renowned for her ‘courageous’ choices.

‘Her disarming ability to shake us loose from false conventional moorings and thrust us into moments of profound truth has made her an essential artist in cinema for the past thirty-five years,’ Roy said.
